Polling data showed that Kentucky Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Amy McGrath was deeply under water in State Sen. Phillip Wheeler’s rural Eastern Kentucky district. Sen. Wheeler’s opponent, Glenn Hammond, attended a McGrath event and was photographed with her. A photo taken of McGrath and Hammond “fist-bumping” was the foundation for this spot, which proved highly effective, and allowed Sen. Wheeler to “piggyback” onto the massive spending by Sen. McConnell’s campaign and other pro-McConnell groups. We called this spot “Love Affair.”
This spot, “Tax Cheat” and the accompanying spot “Love Affair” were in response to a pair of deeply personal, brutally negative attack ads launched against Republican Kentucky State Sen. Phillip Wheeler by his Democratic opponent Glenn Hammond. Hammond made repeated allegations that Wheeler did not support public education, yet by failing to pay his taxes on time, Hammond deprived local communities and school districts of badly needed revenue. The spot quickly put Hammond on the defensive and helped Sen. Wheeler win victory by an overwhelming margin.
With the declining fortunes of the coal industry in Eastern Kentucky, tourism has emerged as a vital component of the region’s future. This spot, “Tourism,” allowed us to showcase State Sen. Phillip Wheeler’s efforts to ensure completion of a critical bridge that will allow greatly expanded access to the Breaks Interstate Park, a key regional tourism asset. The spot also featured the showcasing of the region’s immense natural beauty and highlighted Sen. Wheeler’s support for ATV trails/adventure tourism. Sen. Wheeler was re-elected by an expansive margin despite his opponent’s vast personal spending on the race.
Former Carter Co. Attorney Patrick Flannery mounted a 2020 bid for state representative in the 96th District (Carter & Lawrence) counties. Flannery faces a Republican Primary challenger from Lawrence County and went on to defeat incumbent State Rep. Kathy Hinkle (D-Louisa) by a record margin.
This spot proved very popular and effective. It was filmed at Rep. Brenda’s farm in rural Garrard County. His opponent claimed Rep. Brenda was not sufficiently conservative. This spot highlighted Rep. Brenda’s strong support for Second Amendment rights including an endorsement with an “A” rating from the NRA.
